Our Philosophy
Active Hive exists to provide as many children as possible the opportunity to have a positive experience with a variety of sports at a young age. We are passionate about ensuring children develop in a fun, safe and happy environment whilst educating them not only in sports but as young people.

What we do...
Our name says it all, we are a 'hive' of activity bringing Physical Educataion and School sport to life in Solihull and the West Midlands. We do this in every session, every conversation and every interaction we have with you as our customer.
Founder, Chris Shipway is a highly qualified coach with over 20 years of sports coaching and CPD delivery experience working with one year olds all the way to adults.
We specialise in school sports coaching, including PPA cover and active lunchtime clubs. We also operate extra-curricular and holiday clubs in Solihull and the surrounding areas, focusing primarily on rugby & multi-sport.

Our aim is to engage more young people in physical activity and sports by offering fun, safe and enjoyable sessions. We are proud to be part of the government's aim to encourage more young people to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.
Our team of highly qualified staff are always happy to put you first. With a wealth of knowledge within their sport, our coaches have a genuine passion in a wide range of sports. Our coaches are qualified to a minimum of Level 1 with a relevant national governing body. All of our coaches hold a DBS, first aid and safeguarding certificate.

PPA is a valuable time in any teacher's week.
Keep your class in safe hands with one of our experienced sports coaches delivering PE lessons to your students during your PPA time.
With the ever growing pressure on teachers we all know how valuable the planning, preparation and assessment time can be in a primary school.
Some schools struggle to find a reliable, cost effective solution to their PPA cover but that's why we only work with committed, experienced and enthusiastic coaches that have a passion to deliver quality PPA cover.
Our sports educators are confident managing full classes whilst possessing the skills and qualifications required by your local authority. Educators will work with your children at the heart of the session whilst managing challenging behaviour effectively.

Below are examples of how we can run PPA cover in your school but we are more than happy to tailor the service to suit the needs of your school
Morning
- Welcome students into class.

Providing Students With Free And Paid Opportunities To Get Active
Helping Students Hit Their 30 Minutes of Physical Activity in Primary Schools Across solihull & the west midlands

- These are generally parent funded sports clubs.
- Best sports are those which don't require pupils to get changed like Soft Archery, Table Tennis, etc.
- We can run other sports too and will supervise children getting changed.
- Parents can book on and pay using the uSports online booking system.
- Schools can access the register electronically or can print one off
active lunchtime
- Run as school funded drop-in sessions.
- Allows pupils free choice to get involved.
- Most schools run clubs at least 3 times a week to reach more pupils.
- Mixture of easy to understand games such as Foxes and Farmers.
- Coaches require a small amount of space, around 1/3 of a netball court.

Utilise Your PE & Sport Premium Funding For Teacher CPD To Upskill Your Teachers In PE
How Does It Work?
Our PE Mentors will work with your teachers in their own classes to improve their understanding on the deliver of PE.
The process will start with teachers observing the mentor and then gradually over the programme they will lead more and more of the session themselves with mentor feedback.
At the start and the end of the programme, teachers will complete a self review which will allow the individual and you as a school to clearly see the results. This works as great evidence for Ofsted too in the effective use of your PE & Sport Premium budget and teacher development.

We work closely with schools delivering tailored programmes of work to suit your school. Active Hive are confident that we can help your school use your PE and School Sport Premium effectively to help deliver a fantastic sports provision
Mr Shipway has provided our children with outstanding rugby coaching which is clearly planned, delivered and assessed. By working with all 90 of our Year 3 children, he has inspired

Head coach -chris shipway
Current Forwards & Defence Coach at Bromsgrove RFC. The former Moseley, Worcester, Saracens, Bracknell, Rugby Lions & Bromsgrove player, has a vast experience of coaching and development for youth & adult players as well as developing team units and whole teams. Further supported by his teaching & development experience, including roles such as PE Curriculum Lead, Regional SGO, Head of Rugby at Silhillians & Moseley Oak along with coaching Berkshire, North Midlands and Midlands squads.
“I am incredibly passionate about inspiring and developing future rugby players. I have over 20 years coaching & playing top level rugby. I am excited to start this journey and to be in a position where I can impart that knowledge & experience & technical knowhow to recognise talent, realise potential, share best practice and provide inspiration to this next generation.”

nick wright
Current Academy Forwards Coach at Bromsgrove & former Bromsgrove player with over 100 1st XV appearances Nick brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the team.
Having also been a DPP coach in Yorkshire, Nick has a unique insight into the RFU Pathway programmes and has a proven track-record of developing young talent.

Current Bromsgrove & North Midlands Back, Tom is currently completing a Masters in Sports Coaching at Worcester University. Tom brings an enthusiastic fresh outlook on how the game should be played and the former Saracens DPP prospect understands how to get the best out of players and help them unlock their potential with though provoking sessions and an intuitive outlook on player development.
Finn Haynes
Finn recently represented the Midlands U20's at the England Rugby Divisional Championships, and the young front-row forward has already racked up nearly 50 games at senior rugby and is attracting attention from top level clubs. The developement Finn has made has helped build a deeper understanding of the development processes which has proved invaluable to our young athletes during our Summer Camp & Masterclass programme. We are excited to have his insight in future sessions

1 to 1 coaching allows the player to target specific needs, build greater confidence, develop advanced techniques and feel comfortable in the coaching environment.

The Academy programme - The Academy offers a 1st class Talent Development Programme, with Professional Coaches delivering Tactical, Technical Skills,
Where – Camp Hill Rugby Club, Shirley, Solihull
When – Monday & Friday Evenings From 17:30 – 20:00
The Academy is a 40-week programme delivered inTermly 6/7 week blocks.
Cost – The cost of a place in the Academy will be £12.50 per session (1 session per week), which will be invoiced in 6/7 week blocks and paid in advance of each block.
Places on the Academy – Numbers are limited. Once full, new players will join the waiting list to trial.

Academy purpose – To provide players with Professional Coaching and support with their playing ambitions, whether that be elite, national, local or university level. One of our objectives is to help players gain invitations to DPP programmes, however, we are also here to support those who are not selected or even de-selected. Please note that a player can be in both programmes at the same time.
Each player will have their own IDP (Individual Development Plan) to help them understand their current performance level and identify key areas for development.
Will it conflict with club activity? We have no intention of taking players away from their clubs and there will be no expected priority to the Academy, nor would this affect a player’s ability to be selected or maintain a place in the Academy. We currently run 2 Academy training evenings, so that players can avoid a clash with their club training.
Selection criteria – The selection criteria is based on attitude, mind-set and ambition. We are not only looking at players’ current performance levels, however we are looking for highly motivated individuals. Players will be monitored throughout each 4-week block, as their place on the following block is not guaranteed. A place on the following block will only be offered to those that continue to meet the selection criteria, and will offered to those on the waiting list if these are not met.

The ability to have extra specific based training with players can be hugely beneficial. It also lends itself to combining skillsets and creating a competitive but also supportive environment in which to train.
For example, Players working together to develop contact skills, decision making, attacking and defending skills. or even postion specific; A fly-half working with a full back (testing each other), 2 props working on scrummaging technique, A 9 and 10 working together to develop a tighter bond.
Bespoke sessions are created to develop skills in small groups to ensure individual needs are addressed and developed.
